Thousands of scientific studies have been published exploring the ability of tDCS to influence human cognition, memory, problem-solving abilities, focus, insight, decision-making, depression, and mathematical and language learning skills.
tDCS stands for Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation and is a form of neurostimulation (also known as neuromodulation). It’s a procedure that uses very low levels of electrical currents applied to the scalp that targets specific areas of the brain in order to enhance brain activity, often producing profound results. It has the distinct advantages of being inexpensive, easy to administer, noninvasive (it does not enter the body) and painless. When applied by our board-certified clinicians, transcranial direct current stimulation is widely regarded as a safe method of brain stimulation, causing no short-term harm. Safety protocols limit the current, duration, and frequency of stimulation, thereby limiting the side effects and risk.
tACS (Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation) is similar to tDCS as a neuromodulatory technique, but instead of applying a direct electrical current, tACS oscillates a sinusoidal current at a chosen frequency to interact with the brain’s natural cortical oscillations.
tRNS (Transcranial Random Noise) is a non-invasive noise stimulation that can increase synchronization of neural firing by amplifying the oscillatory activity and reducing the amount of internal noise. If a signal is too weak to induce action potential generation and random noise is added the improvement of the signal can lead to enhanced cognitive performance.
tDCS was primarily used as a therapeutic activity for patients suffering from different brain injuries, including stroke. However, new research conducted on adults who were healthy have shown that constantly releasing low levels of electrical current to specific brain areas can result in an increase in cognitive performance when it comes to different tasks.
Research is being conducted all over the world examining Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation’s ability to enhance language and mathematical ability, attention span, problem-solving, memory, and coordination. In addition, tDCS has also been documented as having impressive potential to treat debilitating disorders such as depression, anxiety, chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, OCD, Alzheimers, Dementia, Schizophrenia, effects from stroke, epilepsy, and traumatic brain injury.
To really understand tDCS, you must understand the human brain. The brain is the most complex organ in the human body, comprised of an intricate network of BILLIONS of nerve cells, called neurons. These special cells control and react to everything that happens in our bodies. The neurons in your brain communicate to each other using tiny electrical, and chemical impulses called synapses. Electrical synapses, unlike chemical synapses, conduct nerve impulses faster (approximately 10 times faster), causing vital information to pass from neuron to neuron more quickly.
Here is where tDCS comes in. tDCS works by strengthening or weakening synaptic transmission between neurons by augmenting synaptic plasticity which is, in turn, the cellular basis of learning. tDCS is often combined with specific training. The training in itself produces learning (synaptic plasticity), and concurrent tDCS amplifies these effects and enhances synaptic plasticity.
Some research has shown that repetitive stimulation, for example on a daily basis for one week, can induce longer lasting, and more “ingrained” effects. Additional studies have shown that the effects of tDCS may last a month or more.
tDCS and tACS have recently been used more and more as a tool for neuroscience research, and for the assessment and treatment of various disorders. To read about some of the exciting research on tDCS click here.
tDCS and tACS are effective not only in treating a variety of disorders, particularly depression, and also can help you improve your memory and perform better at work and school. Your consultation will be with the Founder & Clinical Director of The Brain Performance Center: Leigh Richardson MS, LPC, NCC, BCN, BCB. She has over a decade of experience and is a Licensed Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Board Certified in Neurofeedback, Associate Fellow, and Board Certified in Biofeedback.
We are located in Dallas, TX. Dallas is open from Monday to Saturday. Our consultation is done mainly in Dallas but we offer phone consultations as an alternative.
We provide a one-time program to treat your condition without the use of drugs and other therapy. A program of 10 sessions would cost an average of $3,300. Our services are not covered by insurance but HSA funds can be utilized.
All decisions made regarding your medication should be made with your prescribing physician. That being stated, a large portion of patients pursue Bio/Neurofeedback with the goal of being weaned off their medication, or the amount being reduced.
There are no side effects associated with Biofeedback or Neurofeedback. Although, patients often report better sleep and focus, decreased impulsiveness and a relaxed mood. In fact, these are the primary reasons Neurofeedback is chosen as an alternative to medication.
“Hello, I have been on medication for anxiety for many years. And lately, I either needed to increase the dose or change my medicine to something else. I started on this program and I made it a priority to get well, do the most because the anxiety was so bad, the panic attacks were horrible. So the program has been very, very helpful. I wake up in the morning and I can enjoy my cup of coffee, read if I want to, and life is GOOD. This has been the best thing that I could have done for me. The anxiety is gone, and it is so wonderful to know that there is hope for everyone. That you don’t need to go through life scared, afraid. Let’s not waste time. Let’s enjoy life.”

“My son, when he was about 7 years old, was very depressed. And there’s nothing more heartbreaking for a parent than seeing your small child be so depressed. So I took him to a psychotherapist. And the psychotherapist ran some tests and he determined that he would need an additional type of therapy called neurofeedback. We started in the fall of his 2nd Grade in school and I immediately saw a change in him. He was much happier. He became more focused. Leigh and her staff treated him like he was a king when he came here. And he loved to come. In fact he still comes back for brain brightening sessions from time to time.”

“My name is Mark. I came to the Brain Performance Center about 2-3 months ago and began seeing Leigh here. What brought me here was the fact that I had chronic anxiety and even panic attacks. I suffered from both of those things pretty much my entire life. I began brain training with Leigh 2-3 months ago. I’ve probably done about 17 or 18 sessions. And the cool thing is that after 17 or 18 sessions the anxiety has come down significantly and the panic is basically gone.”
